Mexico, the November 2011 Trip

A few pics from the most recent trip aboard "Rot Kat," including one of skipper and crew, sans me. We sailed from Puerto Escondido to La Paz, then on to Mazatlan, San Blas and finally La Cruz. Along the way, Arjan, our skipper, chose to remove the port side transmission to change out a errant screw that was prohibiting reverse. To remove the transmission meant lifting the engine and producing a large hole--where the saildrive sits--that allowed the port engine compartment to fill halfway with water. A little weird when you first see the water coming in.

Also, a few whales graced us with a breach or two, and dolphins raced along Rot Kat's bow.

Spread out on the bed in a motel in La Paz, which was a welcome refuge during a downpour of monsoon dimenions, is Andy after our long road trip, the last few miles on fumes, from Cabo airport to La Paz.

We were also visited by a couple of stowaway birds--it seems to have become a motif with Rot Kat now, the first being the infamous Reggie from the April trip.

The Christening of Namaste

My boat, "Namaste," was purchased in October of 2010. I loved her name, but wanted to make complete peace with the gods of the sea, so on Friday, September 23rd, 2011, almost a year later, I had a little ceremony with about a hundred of my closest friends.

A very fine bottle of French champagne was dedicated to the four winds and Neptune, and then Namaste's bow was kissed with another. The "Minister" delivered his solemn words, and then the party began!

Chris Moe and "The Minister" assist in the "re-christening"of Namaste,
my ODay 37. The Ile de France--see the round of brie--was the first vessel I
ever sailed on when my family immigrated from England--I was three.
That's real French Champagne, btw.

Not so real champagne; preparing for the christening on the bow

The Music Never Stops

Since 1989, I've taken respite during the Memorial Day holiday at a very special gathering of friends and friends of friends to share visions, music, frisbee, fee fees, food and more.

Trip to Bradford Island

In August, we sailed Namaste up to the Delta from the San Francisco Bay.  My crewmember, Elin Christophersen, and I rose at O dark thirty, leaving from Berkeley.  Eleven hours later Namaste eased against the dock at Bradford Island. The picture at top is of Puerto Escondido, a natural harbor just south of Loreto in southern Baja. Other shots are of Arjan and Debbie, on their boat "RotKat," me on a SUP being "towed" by friends from Canada, and other shots in Baja from two trips this year, including group shots of the SailFest fleet in May, dinner on "Talion," and a ray getting "high."
